3.6 - 2.7 Billion Years Ago

Vaalbara was a supercontinent, possibly the first in the history of the Earth. It arose in a world dominated by oceans and small volcanic Island chains, a punishing world of low oxygen, crushing pressure, and intense heat.

But even in this hostile early world, life was beginning. Stromatolites, layered mounds of rock deposited by cyanobacteria, lined many of Earth's rocky coasts and were just beginning to create the oxygen-rich atmosphere we know today.

About[]

Completing Vaalbara will unlock Rodinia.

The factions Daughters of Gaia and Sons of Hephaestus both invite the player to terraform an in-game simulation of what Earth was like back then in their own way. They tell the player that the simulation will teach an A.I. how to automatically terraform other planets. The player gets to decide which advice to follow.

Victory is achieved when reach 100% independence and have fulfilled either the mission Alana gave (paradise habitability) or the one Red gave (kept stats within 5% of original stats). And don't need to complete the secondary goal for the faction of choose (500.000.000 population for the UNSA / 1.000.000.000c revenue for Horizon Corporation/ Research all technologies for the FFI).

You have been granted access to a secret project under development by a foreign power: an automated system currently being taught how to terraform a planet.

One side wants you to terraform to Paradise, the other wants you to maintain the starting stats of the planet. it's up to you who to side with. At the time you reach completion for each world, your choice will be finalized in the computer's memory.

Strategy[]

General[]

Despite being labelled as an Easy World, this planet is actually very difficult, the huge amount of Vapor in the atmosphere makes flooding an ever present risk for both transformation and conservation missions, and the Pressure is thick enough to crush the player’s facilities, so constantly levelling up the buildings to prevent them from being destroyed entirely is key.

For transformation[]

Be sure to decrease the amount of water in the atmosphere before decide to cool down the planet, otherwise the planet will flood. Decreasing pressure will also decrease the temperature, so don't do that yet either. Set temp to +400,000 mK, get rid of that GAS and then put the temp to habitable stats.

Keep in mind that there is a lot of vapor in the atmosphere. will need Spaceports, Ice Launchers and Orbital Mirrors, both of the same level, to reduce the water level. It will not be huge, but it is a good start.

Although it may seem easy at first sight (it has a visible ocean), it is incredibly difficult to maintain the water levels. It is overall a very long and arduous process to terraform Vaalbara.

For conservation[]

Like in the terraforming scenario, you will need to keep an eye on the water level. Most of the planet’s water is in vapour form, and as long as you don’t dramatically lower the temperature (directly or by lowering pressure) it should stay that way. However it is still possible to accidentally flood the planet when correcting for pressure, so be careful.

The Soletta is entirely useless for conservation on Vaalbara, since the starting temperature is outside the soletta’s maximum temperature. Heat should be regulated instead through pressure.

The acceptable range for oxygen levels on Vaalbara is extremely narrow, with a starting level of 800 and 40 either way. It is best, if possible, to avoid building anything that affects oxygen levels at all - for example, you might want to skip hab complexes on the way to hab domes. Of course, you will need to correct for Alana’s interventions (which will most usually target oxygen).

Biosphere[]

Vaalbara only has 1 native species when start a new world. Click the links for more info on biospheres and phyla and traits.

Trivia[]

  • Vaalbara was the first hypothetical supercontinent in Earth's history. It began forming 3.6 billion years ago, finished forming 3.1 billion years ago, and broke up 2.8 billion years ago, which makes it one of the earliest Earth's supercontinents.
  • As of now, it is in debate of when it existed or even if it did.
  • Vaalbara consists of 2 cratons:
    • Kaapvaal (modern day South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Mozambique)
    • Pilbara (a part of Australia)
  • The first life-forms evolved and the oceans were green around this time period.
  • The Earth's atmosphere by this time is quite thicker than it is today, but there is no oxygen in the air. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide existed back then.
  • Even though Vaalbara was shown with a clear atmosphere in the Historical Earths pack, Vaalbara has an atmosphere that completely covers the planet. If playing with biospheres the only species is stromatolites, which are colonies of cyanobacteria. The stromatolites can easily go extinct in-game. In real life stromatolites still live on Earth. Some of them are nearby the coast of Australia. (The reason why Vaalbara has a thick atmosphere is because a lot of CO2 existed in the atmosphere.) Evidence shows that a 100 bar atmosphere is present 4.3 billion years ago existed in that Early Earth, but the plate tectonics and the cyanobacteria thinned the atmosphere quickly, converting carbon dioxide to oxygen.

Dialogue[]

After pick a faction (only UNSA, Horizon Corporation, and the FFI are available), a dialogue starts playing. At the end of the dialogue can start playing Vaalbara. The dialogue has no impact on the missions are given.
